ASTM A335 Alloy Pipe: P11 Selection and Ordering Requirements
Specify ASTM A335 P11 pipe with the correct wall basis, condition, fabrication and inspection documents. Avoid grade and standard substitutions.

ASTM A335 P11 pipe is a specified ferritic alloy-steel pipe product used where the equipment design calls for that grade and product standard. Selecting it involves the wall basis, dimensions, final condition, joining requirements and examinations, not simply choosing an alloy name. A335 covers several grades, so an order reading only A335 alloy pipe is incomplete.
Key takeaway: state P11, the contractual A335/A335M edition and the exact dimensional and inspection requirements. A related tube grade, a carbon steel pipe or another A335 grade is not an automatic substitute.
What ASTM A335 P11 pipe does and does not establish
The ASTM A335/A335M-26 scope covers seamless ferritic alloy-steel pipe intended for high-temperature service. It explicitly identifies both nominal-wall and minimum-wall supply. Selection still depends on design, service conditions and the applicable material properties. The specification is not a self-contained piping-system design code.
Start with the approved piping or equipment material class. Confirm the material designation, grade, edition and any owner requirements. When an ASME designation is required, verify the permitted material and certification basis rather than assuming that a dual-name advertisement establishes approval. A substitution should carry a documented technical disposition.
The carbon-versus-alloy material guide explains the broader decision. An alloy grade should be selected to meet a defined requirement; the word alloy does not make every alternative safer or more suitable.
State the wall basis rather than assuming a schedule is enough
Pipe may be ordered using a nominal pipe size and wall designation or using agreed dimensions within the governing requirements. The purchase order must make the dimensional system and wall basis unambiguous. In particular, do not turn a minimum-wall design requirement into a nominal-wall purchase simply because a familiar schedule appears in a supplier’s catalogue.
ASME B36.10 is a dimensional standard for welded and seamless wrought steel pipe. Its role is different from the A335 material product specification. A dimensional designation describes geometry; it does not independently establish material grade, heat treatment or suitability for the process environment.
For example, a quotation can identify a pipe size accurately yet omit whether the project requires a special minimum wall after tolerances and machining. Treat that omission as a technical question, not a minor clerical issue. The buyer should compare the offered dimensional basis against the approved design requirement before evaluating the price.
| Quotation field | What to verify | Common misunderstanding |
|---|---|---|
| Product specification | A335/A335M edition and P11 grade | All A335 grades are interchangeable |
| Size and wall | Dimensional reference, actual callout and wall basis | A schedule is a pressure rating |
| Ends | Cut length, end geometry and preparation | Any standard end is suitable for the weld joint |
| Condition | Required final condition and supporting evidence | Heat-treated means the same process for every grade |
Welding and forming need a qualified route
Tell the supplier which forming and joining operations follow delivery. Pipe compliance as supplied and the acceptability of a completed weld or formed component are related but separate matters. The fabrication procedure must account for the material, wall section, joint design and intended service.
Do not use a general article as a preheat, interpass or postweld heat-treatment instruction. Those values and procedures must come from the applicable qualified requirements. If the material condition will be changed after receipt, define the final acceptance stage and the evidence that will demonstrate the finished requirement.
TWI’s low-alloy steel guidance supports reviewing actual chemistry and joint circumstances before welding. This is especially important when a commercial substitute is proposed late in the order. A grade change may have consequences beyond a new line on the material certificate.
Use the heat-treatment overview to organize the supplier discussion, then obtain the project-specific processing and inspection requirements in writing.
A release package must connect examinations to the supplied pipe
Agree the required examinations and purchaser options against the ordered edition before production. The public ASTM abstract is useful for understanding the specification’s purpose, but it does not replace the full test, acceptance and supplementary requirements. Avoid declaring a generic NDT result equivalent to every required examination.
At release, connect specification and grade, heat identity, dimensions, final condition, test results and marking. Check any additional project requirements separately. A supplier may produce valid standard-compliance documents while a purchaser-specific witness point or supplementary examination remains incomplete.
For cut pieces, specify how identification will be transferred and retained. The traceability guide explains why an original long-pipe certificate must remain linked to the delivered components. Where material cannot be positively identified, a copied certificate is not an adequate remedy.
P11 procurement review before placing the order
- Confirm that the design calls for P11 under the appropriate product designation.
- State one contractual edition and consistent unit basis.
- Provide dimensions, nominal or minimum-wall basis, lengths and end preparation.
- Define delivery condition and later fabrication operations.
- List mandatory examinations, optional requirements and witness points.
- Specify documentation, marking, preservation and deviation approval.
The technical supplier evaluation guide can structure the evidence review. Ask which requirements the offered supply route can meet for the actual dimensions and grade. General manufacturing capability is not proof of compliance for a particular order.
Frequently asked questions
Is P11 the same product as A213 T11?
No automatic equivalence should be assumed. A335 and A213 are different pipe and tube product specifications. Any proposed replacement needs comparison of dimensions, condition, testing, documentation and design approval, not just the apparent alloy relationship.
Does a pipe schedule give the working pressure?
No. A schedule is a dimensional designation. Pressure design also depends on temperature, material properties, tolerances, corrosion, joints and the governing design code.
What should be sent with a P11 inquiry?
Send Tenjan the approved material callout, dimensions and wall basis, drawing, quantity and inspection requirements. Request a written technical offer and deviation list before accepting the commercial quotation.
