ASTM A335 P22 Pipe: Ordering and Verification
Review astm a335 p22 pipe. Check scope, material condition, inspection evidence and ordering details before accepting a supplier quotation.

P22 is a grade within ASTM A335 for seamless ferritic alloy-steel pipe for high-temperature service.
Specify P22 as a complete product requirement
The order must state more than the grade: include the applicable edition, dimensions, wall basis, length, delivery condition and required options. The product specification does not replace the construction code or determine a universally acceptable pressure and temperature for a proposed component.

Control condition and fabrication
The permitted heat-treatment requirements and the ordered condition need to be checked against the applicable specification. Do not assume a single treatment route applies to every grade and size in the A335 family. Proposed welding, bending and later treatment should be reviewed before purchase. The fabricator's qualified procedures and the equipment design remain important even when the incoming pipe has correct material certification.
Do not substitute P11, P22 or P91 by name
These grades have different material and fabrication requirements. A higher nominal alloy content or a higher strength figure is not sufficient evidence for substitution. Review design allowables, degradation mechanisms, joining procedures, dimensional requirements and inspection obligations. P22 pipe and T22 tube also belong to different product specifications, so a related alloy designation does not make them interchangeable supply items.

Define inspection evidence
Request material identification, the required chemical and mechanical results, heat-treatment evidence where specified, dimensions and the applicable examination records. Positive material identification can support an agreed identification plan, but it does not replace condition verification or all chemical testing. The acceptance package should show what was tested, under which procedure and how the result is linked to the supplied pipe.
A practical specification review
When a distributor offers P22 in an alternative heat-treated condition, request the full description and supporting records before approving the material. Check the proposal against the product specification and fabrication plan. Similar chemistry or a favorable tensile result does not establish that all delivery and project requirements have been met.
Information to confirm before accepting an offer
- Identify the component or supply item, its intended function and the controlled drawing or procedure revision.
- State applicable product and project documents, material or test requirements, dimensions and the condition in which acceptance is assessed.
- Define the required evidence, inspection responsibilities, identification, reporting format and handling of deviations.
- Confirm what the quotation includes, any subcontracted operations, preservation requirements and how proposed changes will be approved.
Resolve unclear requirements before manufacture or examination. Keep the accepted offer, approved deviations and release records together so that a repeat order can use the same technical basis.
